Information for Students

Are you still deciding on a major or considering a change?

Are you close to graduating but still lacking the practical experience you need?

If you answered yes to either question, the STEP Program may be right for you.

STEP is open to all NC State undergraduate students who are in good academic standing – all undergraduates, all majors!

NC State students may choose to participate in the STEP Program at the beginning of their academic program, as they explore potential majors and careers; or they may enter STEP as juniors or seniors, to gain experience and enhance their resumes and career prospects.

Employers rate relevant work experience as the single most important criterion in the selection of job candidates. An experiential program like STEP can be the key to a more meaningful education and a brighter future.

The STEP Program allows students to:

  • Reinforce classroom learning and improve academic performance
  • Learn new skills and proficiencies
  • Discover potential career pathways and learn how to prepare for them
  • Grow professionally through workplace experience
  • Build resumes and portfolios and improve future job opportunities
  • Establish and develop a network of professional contacts

You can remain a full-time student and gain valuable work experience! Students that participate in the STEP Program spend about 20 hours per week at the placement site. To maintain full-time status, students register for the STEP Program course (COP 101) and take an additional 6 academic credit hours.

If you’re interested in applying to the STEP Program, please review the information and complete the STEP Program application. The application does not bind you to the program or guarantee you a spot – it just lets STEP staff know of your interest. Once they’ve reviewed your application, they’ll contact you to schedule a New Participant appointment.

If you need more information before applying, you can schedule an appointment with a STEP Program coordinator by calling 919.515.2300.
